Picking quotes to back up my statements is always the hardest part of writing an essay for me. That being said, in paper two I tried my hardest to really integrate good quotes into my paper. For example, on page two, paragraph three, I take specific examples from two people and connect them together. I use Pollen’s quote “many of today’s cooking programs rely unapologetically on ingredients that themselves contain a lot of ingredients: canned soups, jarred mayonnaise, frozen vegetables, powdered sauces, vanilla wafers, limeade concentrate, marshmallow fluff” (Pollan 7) to explain that he believes cooking should be from scratch and not pre-made ingredients. Because I am trying to go against this I use a former student, Juliet Roy’s quote that says,“The environment was light and cheerful, and I had never been so happy to see the gorgeous smile on my mother’s radiant face” (Roy). I used this because Roy’s favorite meal was Beef macaroni and cheese which came from boxed mac and cheese. I used these two quotes to go against each other to show that love and happiness can still come from pre-made ingredients. I felt that this showed my ability to use quotes and show textual engagement.
